A Swingin’ New Year’s Eve

Just unpacked from an absolute terrific time at the Gatesworth. We got to play their New Year’s Eve gala, and it was a great time. We’ve gotten to play their a couple of times, but never for their NYE Party.

First of all, we can’t say enough how great this place is.  Kathy, who runs entertainment (and other things I’m sure), is absolutely wonderful and greets us with a hug. The staff is exceptional and best of all, the guests who live there are totally fun.  Musically, it’s wonderful. They have a beautiful Yamaha baby grand (which means I get to leave my heavy keyboard at home), and there’s something acoustically great about their atrium where we play — everything sounds great. It’s just so rewarding to play there.

Naturally for a place like this, we skew our set to lean heavily on the swing tunes and hummables and dancables from the Great American Song Book, and do less blues, etc. But we have a deep and wide set list so that’s no problem and in fact is downright enjoyable to go heavy on that portion of our list. (We do the same for 50/60/whatever anniversaries as well, but for say, a corporate party or a St. Louis Wedding, we branch out and include tunes from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Van Morrison, etc. — see our “4 Martini Set“)

A St. Louis New Year’s Eve is always special, and I think we can make even more so. We love playing on that last night of the year wherever and for whoever, and we also love the Gatesworth!
